Bandit was dumped at the Oakland shelter by an owner who had a “change in lifestyle” and didn’t have time for the dog anymore. Bandit did horribly at the shelter - staff was not able to touch him. Initially, a net had to be used to extract him from his kennel. In his 2 weeks at the shelter, he made very little progress and was given a euthanasia date. Nobody’s Perfekt Dogs was contacted and we pulled him into foster care. Bandit immediately bonded with his rescuer - allowing all types of handling. He was very affectionate and playful. However, that did not easily spread over to other people - he was a bite risk for strangers.
Bandit is just a young, unsocialized dog that needs to build up his confidence around people. He loves playing with the other dogs in his foster home, and has bonded with most of his foster family. He does bark and charge at some visitors to the home. A bark collar or spray bottle has proved effective for curtailing that behavior. In the meantime, he is being socialized with new people at our adoption center. We are slowly seeing improvements in his trust of folks outside of his foster family.
Bandit will need to go to a home with other friendly, playful dogs that can set a good example. He needs an adopter who is experienced in working with insecure dogs. With the proper training and precautions around strangers, Bandit really is a sweet, lovable dog with people he trusts.
