Vincent (”Vinnie”) was confiscated from his owners by Oakland animal control due to neglect. He was a “backyard dog” with very little socialization. His coat was a mess, and he was often observed with no food or water. In the 7 weeks that Vinnie was at the shelter, he did eventually bond with one of the volunteers and started to blossom, but that didn’t translate to him trusting other people. Because of his distrust of strangers and having lived his whole life outside, he wasn’t deemed adoptable by the shelter, so they called Nobody’s Perfekt Dogs to rescue him.
In his transitional foster home with lots of other dogs, Vinnie was overwhelmed and preferred to spend all of his time in the backyard (including overnight). When we transferred him to a foster home with no other dogs (just a cat), and a single foster mom, he did much better. He quickly bonded with the foster mom, and is comfortable around the cat. However, he is still uncomfortable with people he doesn’t know well, and retreats when there are a bunch of dogs around.
Vinnie will be a “work in progress” for a while. He would do well in a quiet home with 1-2 adults, a cat, and maybe a low-key, friendly dog. Or he could be the only dog. Whoever adopts him may want to continue socializing him with different people, but expect some snapping at strangers who go too quickly in trying to engage with him, while he is still in training. Having a well socialized dog already in the home, may help his progress.
