Bernie came to us from one of our shelter partners after being hit by a car, which rendered him a paraplegic (no use of his back legs). Shelter staff thought maybe he had a broken pelvis, but we had a hunch that it was an injured spine. We took him straight to our vet for x-rays. Good news was it wasn’t a fractured pelvis, nor a fractured spine. Instead, it was two compressed spinal discs. More good news was that although he couldn’t use his back legs, he appeared to be continent (able to pee and poop on his own). We started him on a steroid (prednisone) to reduce the inflammation and put him on strict cage rest. Lab work also indicated that there was trauma to his liver, so we started him on liver supplements. After a few weeks, he regained the use of his back legs and his liver returned to normal. We are in the process of seeing if acupuncture may help his continued recovery. Unfortunately, however, due to this spinal trauma he is at risk of re-injuring the spine. Potential adopters will need to insure that he doesn’t jump off furniture nor over do it with too rigorous exercise.

Bernie is a sweet soul, who likes to stay out of trouble and avoid drama. He does like his outdoor time, and would do better in a home with fenced-in yard. He could get along with another well-behaved, friendly dog. He should be okay with cats.

Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13.
